The Vispring Story












1899
James Marshall, a British engineer living in Canada, crafts the world’s first pocket-spring mattress to bring his wife comfort during a period of illness.
1901
John Nolon and Frederick James introduce Marshall’s innovation to the UK, founding the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company in London.
1911
Vi-Spring is born. The company adopts the Roman numeral VI, a nod to the six springs sewn into each pocket, and the iconic hare motif.
1912
Our mattresses find a home aboard the legendary RMS Titanic, elevating sleep in each of its 39 suites and 350 First Class cabins.
1932
Vispring introduces The Vibase, the world’s first pocket-sprung divan, offering an unrivalled sleep experience.
1971
Production moves to Plymouth, where skilled artisans continue to handcraft each mattress using time-honoured techniques.
1977
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II receives a Regal Supreme bed for her Silver Jubilee, marking a moment of royal distinction.
1991
Vispring first enters Europe, opening a showroom in Brussels.
2010
We launch in North America, offering our bespoke mattresses to customers across the continent.
2012
Vispring receives the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, a recognition for innovation and excellence. We continue to expand, launching in Asia.
2022
We open our flagship store in London’s iconic St James’s, inviting those who seek the finest sleep experience to explore our heritage.
Today
Today, almost 200 craftspeople in our Plymouth workshop continue our legacy. In 2024, we proudly received the King’s Award for Enterprise – a testament to our enduring commitment to ingenuity and care.
With up to three layers and over 70 unique spring types, each configuration is carefully chosen to deliver a personalised balance of comfort, responsiveness and resilience — quietly redefining the way we sleep.
