At Home with Eudon Choi

Vispring Customer Stories
This week, Eudon is inviting us to his Hoxton home to chat about all things design, sustainability and sleep.

“As a society, we no longer prioritise sleep as much as we should. People are much less willing to invest in a bed than say, a brand-new sofa or a purpose-built kitchen. Perhaps this is because our bedrooms are private places — we don’t show them off in the same way as we would other parts of our homes.”

After welcoming us into his east London home, fashion designer Eudon Choi opened up the conversation with an observation about the importance of buying a good bed. After taking a seat in the living area of his modern townhouse, he explained, “I think as a society we no longer prioritise sleep as much as we should. People are much less willing to invest in a bed than say, a brand-new sofa or a purpose-built kitchen. Perhaps this is because our bedrooms are private places — we don’t show them off in the same way as we would other parts of
our homes.”

Eudon and his partner share a unique space in Hoxton, which was designed by Jaccaud Zein Architects and completed in 2015. The layout doesn’t follow a traditional blueprint and instead, all rooms pivot from a central staircase. It’s an ingenious formula, with ceilings stretching 6 metres high in places and scaled up glazed doors leading out to a private courtyard. Airy, spacious and light-filled, there are distinctive pops of colour throughout, with the clean, crisp lines softened by bold textiles, original paintings and carefully grouped decorative ceramics.

This isn’t about luxury or exclusivity, it’s just about prioritising sleep.

Investing in timeless furniture that’s stylish and durable is something they both feel passionate about, so it’s no surprise to learn that when it came to choosing a bed, Vispring was the natural option. Speaking about how he first discovered the brand, he remembered, “I’d slept on Vispring a few times in hotels and always woke up feeling like I’d had the most amazing night’s sleep, so I knew I needed to find something that would help me enjoy that same standard of sleep at home. I’d never heard of the brand before, but once I started researching and discovered their incredible heritage, I knew I needed to learn more. Knowing that every mattress is handmade is a fact that really resonated with me. As a fashion designer, I can appreciate the years of experience it takes to learn the skills you need to make each mattress. What was also really crucial in the decision-making process, was learning that it was made right here in the U.K.

Over the last few years, I’ve become much more conscious of environmental issues, so the manufacturing process and raw materials used was something I needed to feel positive about. Vispring only uses natural, sustainable fibres and fillings — and I figured that as this was something that I push with my own clothing collections, then it made sense to have the same methodology for my mattress.” Prioritising sleep quality was central to the interior décor choices for the bedroom, so the search began to find the biggest bed possible. Eudon smiled and said, “It sounds really obvious — but I think people can often have too much going on in the bedroom. The bed, the divan, the mattress, that’s what the focus should be on because it’s the room you retire to after a long day. We wanted a place where we could sleep really well. This isn’t about luxury or exclusivity, it’s just about prioritising sleep. Yes, at first glance they are very expensive, but we lead hectic lifestyles, so it’s a purchase that safeguards my future wellbeing. Our Vispring is guaranteed for 30 years, so over a lifetime, it’s worth every penny.”
Looping back to the notion of why we rarely discuss our choice of bed with family or friends, Eudon laughed and admitted, “I’ve been showing off the Vispring like a new car — you could even say that I’ve become a bit of a Vispring evangelist! Once you’ve road-tested one and recognised what a game-changer they are, it’s an absolute no-brainer. I feel better than I have in such a long time, and I’m looking forward to many more years of great sleep. I don’t wake up with aches and pains anymore; it’s like floating on air.”
